Dec 23, 2021. Lab cleaning

We refrained from the year-end party this year as well, and ended the year with a lab cleaning. We hope that we can resume various events next year.

Dec. 22, 2021. Installation of a private room

Recently, conference presentations and job hunting interviews have become online, so a private room where we can talk without worrying about the surroundings has been introduced. It's small but comfortable.

Dec. 15-17, 2021. SI2021

Shun presented his research results on water content estimation at the SI2021. This is the result of the Moonshot Project of the JST.

Dec. 14-17, 2021. SIGGRAPH Asia 2021

At SIGGRAPH Asia 2021 held in Tokyo, we presented our research on anime character colorization. It has been a long time since an international conference was held locally, and Suzan participated as a student volunteer. Mr. Takatani, Mr. Ishii, and Mr. Mikami, who are our graduates, also came to the site.

Dec. 9, 2021. New ergonomic chairs

We have replaced all the chairs in the lab with new ergonomic ones. It is time for students to write their master's thesis, so we hope that the burden on the body will be reduced as much as possible.

Nov. 25, 2021, Invited talk by Dr. Kushida

Dr. Kushida gave an invited talk on ToF measurement in fog at the Technical Group on Information Sensing Technologies of the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers. As usual, the presentation was online, but we were able to show the effect in real time by demonstrating from the fog experimental room where artificial fog can be actually generated.

Nov. 24-25, 2021. Visit of Prof. Caron

Prof. Caron of the University of Picardy Jules Verne in France, who is currently working at AIST in Tsukuba, stayed in the laboratory for two days for a joint research meeting. It seems that domestic business trips are about to resume.

Nov. 20, 2021. Takayama science festival

The Takayama Science Festival was held, and we exhibited a demonstration using the ToF camera. Although the scale of the event was reduced, it seems that people with parents and children enjoyed it.

Nov. 13, 2021. NAIST scienece school

NAIST science school was held at Takayama Science Plaza. Prof. Fujimura conducted hands-on learning for children with the title `Glossy? Rough? Let's manipulate the light to change the appearance!'.

Nov. 5-6, 2021. Workshop

The CVIM, CGVI, DCC joint workshop was held online. Ryuta presented the physics-based autoencoder, Takamasa presented the analysis of tumulus pigments, and Prof. Funatomi presented the geometric transformation. Ryuta received the Encouragement Award.

Sep. 24, 2021. Diploma award ceremony

A diploma awarding ceremony was held, and Xiangkun and Yuri received their master's degrees. The degree certificates were handed over by Prof. Mukaigawa.

Sep. 19, 2021. Birthday cake for Yuta

We presented Yuta with a birthday cake with a message plate of "Happy Birthday, Iku-chan".

Sep. 1, 2021. Master thesis presentation

Xiangkun and Yuri have successfully completed their master thesis presentations. We would like to hold a party for them, but unfortunately it is not possible yet.

We held a summer seminar and an internship on the same days. In the hybrid style of online and on-site, participants experienced the theme of "Let's try to clarify foggy images with deep learning!".

July 28-30, 2021. MIRU2021

Yuta presented the research of time-resolved radiosity, Hibiki presented the research of shape measurement of mirrored objects, and Yasuto presented the research of distance measurement using far-infrared on MIRU2021. Hibiki and Yasuto received the MIRU Student Encouragement Awards.

July 25-27, 2021. MVA2021

At the International Conference on Machine Vision Application (MVA2021) held online, Yuri presented research on improving the appearance of ancient documents, and Takahiro presented research on clarifying foreign substances in food. Various props are prepared where the camera does not show.

June 25, 2021. Technical Award

Prof. Kubo received the Technical Award from the Institute of Image Electronics Engineers of Japan for his research results on vascular imaging developed during his stay at Carnegie Mellon University. After the award ceremony, he introduced the principle in the technical award lecture.

May 15, 2021. Open campus

As before, we held an open campus online. To make it more like a real visit to our lab, Yuta made a complete reproduction of our lab in Gather.town.

May 14, 2021. Partition

The partitions between the desks have been completely replaced. It is now a little higher, so we can concentrate on our research.

Apr. 1, 2021. Appointment of Prof. Fujimura

Prof. Fujimura has joined us as an assistant professor. Prof. Mukaigawa called him "Yukky". We look forward to working with you, Yukky-sensei.

Mar. 31, 2021. Goodbye to Professor Tanaka

Goodbye to Professor Tanaka. He met Prof. Mukaigawa, who was an associate professor at Osaka University 10 years ago, and has been studying with him for 10 years as an undergraduate, master, doctoral, and assistant professor. During that time, he developed many new imaging techniques and made many brilliant achievements. We look forward to his further success at Ritsumeikan University. Thank you very much for all your support.

Mar. 24, 2021. Photos of graduates

The graduation ceremony of this year was reduced, and each laboratory handed out their graduation certificates. However, as usual, the photos for the homepage were taken by Prof. Mukaigawa himself.

Mar. 1-12, 2021. Internship

Wataru stayed our lab for a two-week internship to study the wavelength dependency of scattered light removal. Since the state of emergency in Kansai was lifted earlier than expected, he was able to actually conduct measurement experiments using a hyperspectral camera.

Mar. 8, 2021. Graduate School Research Award

Daiki received the 'Graduate School Research Award' from Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan. We hope that our distance measurement technology in the fog will be useful for automatic driving of cars in the future.

Feb. 18-19, 2021. Spring seminar

The spring seminar was held, and three students chose the course of our lab. The seminar was held online, but they tried to solve the problems of spectral imaging, photometric stereo, and synthetic aperture. They studied hard for two days.

Feb. 18, 2021. Environmental arrangement

Mayuka has finished her entrance exam for the doctoral course, so she has started to prepare her new environment from April. Since Prof. Mukaigawa told her to "create an ideal environment", she is preparing a new environment that is easy to study with a 49-inch curved monitor and a Happy Hacking keyboard.

Feb. 5, 2021. Master thesis presentation

This year, all the master thesis presentations from our lab were held on the first day, and it ended all at once. Since we were able to participate online, there were only a few people in the room, which was quite different from the usual year. Good work, M2 students.

Feb. 4, 2021. Online connection at any time

We have set up an online system that allows us to connect at any time with a large monitor, while a tablet terminal was used last spring. We can feel free to know the state of the laboratory even at home.

Jan. 27, 2021. Graduates working for SONY

Mr. Mihara, Mr. Ono, and Mr. Ueda, who are graduates working for SONY, introduced us their works. They visited the laboratory every year, but this year they introduced online. However, we were able to know how they were working well.
