Dec. 21, 2018. Year-end party

After the lab cleaning, we held a year-end party. It was a wonderful course with sukiyaki, sashimi, roast beef, fried chicken, noodles...

Dec. 4-7, 2018. SIGGRAPH Asia 2018

Sophie, who stayed our lab as an internship student from ENSICAEN in France, came back to Japan and presented her research result of the automatic coloring of animation at SIGGRAPH Asia 2018 held in Tokyo.

Dec. 1, 2018. ACM VRST2018

Takafumi received Best Poster Award and Cyber Agent Award, and Yukiko received Best Poster Award from ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology (VRST2018) held at Tokyo.

Nov. 27-30, 2018. French collaborators

Four collaborators came to our lab from France and introduced their recent research results. Professors discussed future plans of the collaborative research.

Nov. 11, 2018. Takayama science town festival

We introduced a demonstration of human pose estimation using ToF camera at the Takayama science town festival. We are aiming to accurately estimate depth information using ToF camera to realize self-driving car.

Nov. 7-8, 2018. CVIM workshop

The CVIM workshop was held at Tohoku university. Takeshi presented a method for depth estimation using ToF camera in the fog. We could effectively use the fog data which were measured at the specific environment test site of the Japan Automobile Research Institute in the hot summer of this year.
Tomoki presented a new imaging system which captures only the specific surface in the scene. This is as an application of the light transport measurement. We brought the pro-cam system by airplane and showed demonstration.

Oct. 30-31, 2018. CREST Camp

We held a research camp at Mt. Katsuragi lodge with members of Prof. Matsushita lab at Osaka university. We accelerate the collaborative research of our CREST project.
A total of 15 members participated, discussed their research topics deeply, and actually conducted data analysis jointly. It was fulfilling two days.

Oct. 12, 2018. Welcome patry

Xingjian from China and Camille from France join our lab. We had a welcome party. M1 students cooked Oden (stew) and Takikomi-Gohan (mixed rice).

Oct. 10, 2018. SHITSUKAN forum

At the open forum of SHITSUKAN held at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Yukiko presented research results on depth perception using ChromaDepth glass. First of all, the pop-up effect of ChoromaDepth glass was surprised. Then, there were a lot of discussions to utilize this glass for SHITSUKAN expression.

Sep. 17-21, 2018. Visiting French collaborators

Prof. Funatomi and Prof. Tanaka visited our collaborators in France and executed hyperspectral and ToF imaging in Amiens Cathedral. It is amazing to have a chance to capture and analyze the precious treasure from 13th century!

Sep. 14, 2018. Internship of Ryota

Ryota stayed as an internship student for one month. He tackled 3D shape reconstruction of metallic object which is difficult to handle. The manuscript for National Convention of IPSJ has been already written. Today is the last day of the internship. Congratulations for your good achievement.

Aug. 22-24, 2018. CEDEC2018

Mr. Ohno, who is one of the alumnus of our lab and now working for Sony, presented his student research achievement at Computer Entertainment Developers Conference (CEDEC2018). It attracted interests from many researchers, so the room was full.

Aug. 18-19, 2018. Lab trip

This year, we went to Kobe and Arima as a lab trip. We visited Arima onsen, Nankinmachi Chinatown, and Kitano Ijinkan. Since photography is one of our research topics, we could enjoy the Kobe Trick Art unexpectedly.

Aug. 17, 2018. Farewell party for Sophie

Sophie will go back to France tomorrow. She came to Japan at the end of April, and studied a new research about animation. She made wonderful research outcomes within just under 4 months. We enjoyed hand-made gyoza party as farewell.

Aug. 8, 2018. Toukae (night candle festival)

Members of NAIST visited the Toukae night candle festival at Nara park. Yukiko and Sophie enjoyed night of the ancient capital with wearing Yukata.

Aug. 6-8, 2018. MIRU2018

We have presented our newest research results on MIRU2018 held at Sapporo. The group of Tsuyoshi and Koki presented a method to control translucency using UV printing, and received MIRU frontier award.
Prof. Kubo demonstrated a visualization of inside of translucent object in real time. This is a collaborated research with CMU. The visualization of vein pattern using normal visible light attracted a lot of attentions. This presentation received MIRU demo presentation award.

Aug. 6-7, 2018. Summer seminar

We held a summer seminar to introduce optical measurement. This time, we prepared a new experiment to detect water using hyper-spectral camera. Water can be seen even with visible light.

Aug. 1-3, 2018. Acceptance of SSH student

We have accepted a high school student from Nishiyamato Gakuen under Super Science High-school program. We prepared a photometric stereo course. Although the mathematics and programming may be difficult, we hope that he knows a way of research in a graduate school.

July 30, 2018. Farewell with Prof. Jayasuriya

Prof. Jayasuriya will return tomorrow. During his stay, we have a lot of discussions and decide our future joint research. He will come back again on Nov.

July 20,2018. Visit of Mr. Fushishita

Mr. Fushishita visited our lab. He is one of the second generation students of our lab, and now working for KUBOTA Systems. We asked him about his current works including 3D CAD system.

July 19, 2018. Arrival of Prof. Jayasuriya and his birthday

Prof. Jayasuriya comes from Arizona state university and will stay our lab for two weeks. Coincidentally, today is his birthday. We celebrated with a cake.

July 10, 2018 Sukiyaki Party

The other day, sukiyaki-don of school restaurant, which Sophie ordered, was completely different from real sukiyaki. To solve the misunderstanding, we held a real sukiyaki party. It seems the first time to eat raw egg for Sophie.

July 4, 2018 Tanabata

Bamboo of Tanabata appears in the university restaurant. We explained the tradition of Tanabata to Sophie, and wrote wishes on strips.

June 6, 2018 Award ceremony of excellent students

Kazuya was selected as an excellent student of NAIST, and awarded in the ceremony.

June 20, 2018 CVPR2018

Prof. Mukaigawa, Prof. Funatomi, Prof. Tanaka and Tsuyoshi have presented our thermal photometric stereo on the CVPR2018 held at Salt Lake City.

June 2, 2018 Birth of super creator

The research project of Kazuya was highly appreciated, and he was certified as a `super creator' under the IPA Mitoh program.

May 24, 2018 BBQ

We had a BBQ party on weekday evening, since we have no chance in the golden week, There are much meat as usual. In this shot, Prof. Funatomi was smoked.

May 22, 2018 East Palace Garden

We took Sophie to sushi restaurant, and then visited the east palace garden in Heijo palace. It is always quiet here.

May 19, 2018 Open Campus

We held an open campus for students who are planing to take an entrance exam. New members also introduced our research themes.

May 4-6, 2018 ICCP2018

The international conference on computational conference (ICCP) was held at CMU. Prof. Kubo presented the EpiScan system. Demonstration exhibition using real system attracted a lot of attention. The next ICCP2019 will be held in Japan, and Prof. Mukaigawa serve as a general chair.

May 1, 2018 Welcome party

Since the schedule of laboratory assignment changed this year, the formal assignment was decided on May. We have a welcome party for nine new students at the usual Taiwanese restaurant. This is also a welcome party for Sophie who came to Japan for internship.

Mar. 24, 2018 Miraikan

We have demonstrated some CGs of the earth on the Geo-Cosmos which is a large spherical display at the Miraikan. This is a cooperative research with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Miraikan. Yukiko explained how to reproduce floating feeling of cloud to kids.

Mar. 23, 2018 Ceremony

The third generation students from our lab got their master degrees. Kazuya got the best excellent student award of NAIST. Yuki and Karin wore Japanese traditional dresses with the support of Ms. Nobori.

Mar. 23, 2018 Visit of Ms. Inoshita

Ms. Inoshita visited our lab. She is the first special research student, when this lab was established. Now, she is working for Canon. Tsuyoshi introduced his research to make realistic replicas which reproduce translucency.

Mar. 20, 2018 Visit of Mr. Kuniyoshi

Mr. Kuniyoshi, who is one of the alumnus of our lab and now working for Panasonic, visited our lab. He explained his current work. Now, he is revising the journal paper of his research.

Mar. 13, 2018 Farewell party

We have held a farewell party for M2 members. The graduation memorabilia is a colored paint of their names in flower letters and juggling balls. The juggling skills during two years were showed.

Mar. 12, 2018 Symposium on Plenoptic Time-Space Technology

A symposium on plenoptic time-space technology was held at Keio University. Masakiyo has presented a computational photography technique to observe cells such as fetlized egg, which is a collaborated work with Panasonic. The presentation is a complete work of the collaboration which includes the contribution of Fusataka who is now working for Panasonic.

Mar. 5-7, 2018 Shitsukan project meeting

The shitsukan project meeting was held at the Tokyo university, and Profs. Mukaigawa and Kubo presented a new method to measure reflection properties, which is an achievement of Taishi. In the poster session, Prof. Kubo explained the algorithm while showing a real lacquerware with gold leaf.

Mar. 3, 2018 CGVI workshop

Tsuyoshi and Koki presented a method to replicate translucency by using UV printer which can print on 3-D objects with various materials in CGVI workshop held at Pi Cafe in Tokyo. This work is a topic on appearance fabrication, whose goal is, for example, to replicate a realistic salmon-looking object by UV printing on a translucent object, once a slice of salmon is measured.

Feb. 26, 2018 Spring seminar

We have held a spring seminar to study a total flow of measurement of reflection properties and CG application. The glossiness of a smart phone was appropriately expressed as a CG.

Feb. 26, 2018 Award ceremony of CICP2017

Kai's group received the award of CICP2017, which is a competitive student project of NAIST. The unique idea that hand actions are recognized using ToF cameras placed around the wrist like a bracelet was evaluated.

Feb. 24, 2018 Birthday of Prof. Funatomi

We have celebrated the birthday of Prof. Funatomi, after the open campus. We have enjoyed soft cheesecakes.

Feb. 1, 2018 Visit of Mr. Sakurai

Mr. Sakurai, who is one of the alumnus of our lab and now working for Panasonic, visited our lab. Although today is the deadline of the master thesis, the lab was quiet except for some students.

Jan. 29, 2018 Welcome back Prof. Kubo !

Prof. Kubo came back to our lab, after his one year stay at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). He struggled to remember the names of M1 students, regrettably, a lot of Skype meetings did not help him remember their names... We are very sorry about that we prepared the cheap sushi, which he should have been waiting for!

Jan. 18-19, 2018 CVIM workshop

Nobuhiro presented about photometric stereo using thermography at CVIM workshop held at Osaka Prefecture University. This presentation is that the decomposition can be solved by using heat with slower transmission than light.
Daisuke also presented about removing fog effect at measurement with ToF camera. The distance error by fog is corrected by understanding the principle of ToF camera.

Jan. 6, 2018 IWRCV2018

The 12th International Workshop on Robust Computer Vision (IWRCV2018) was held at NAIST. Prof. Tanaka presented a material estimation method using ToF camera, and Tsuyoshi presented a hyperspectral imaging system using faced reflectors. In the poster session, Taishi presented a BRDF measurement, Takehiro presented a non-rigid registration, and Yuki presented a measurement of scattering phase function.
