Dec. 23, 2020. Cleanup

We have done the annual year-end cleaning so that we can carry out research activities in a clean environment from next year. It would be a year-end party after this in the usual year, but this year it was a simple ending just by cleaning. Have a good year.

Dec. 6-7, 2020. CICP

NAIST has a unique system called the Creative and International Competitiveness Project (CICP), in which students form a team to plan their research and receive funds to carry out it. This year, two proposals were accepted from our laboratory and we made an interim presentation.

Dec. 4, 2020. Visual/Media Computing Conference

Kazuya presented his research on the spectral super-resolution at the organized session of the Visual/Media Computing Conference 2020. The presentation style becomes online, so we are looking for the optimal camera position to match our eyes.

Nov. 15, 2020. Open campus

An open campus was held on a significantly reduced scale, and we exhibited a demonstration of human pose estimation using a ToF camera. Susan, who has just arrived in Japan from Tanzania and will join us from next April, came to visit us.

Nov. 7-9, 2020. Experiment in fog

Takahiro, Daiki, and Hibiki went to Kyoto for a measuring experiment to confirm whether our ToF measurement technology considering scattering works correctly even in real fog. As expected, a thick fog warning was issued, and a heavy fog occurred in the early morning in Kameoka.

Nov. 5-6, 2020. CVIM Workshop

At the CVIM workshop, Yoshihiro presented his research on the separation of the appearance of closely attached photographic plates, and Taikai presented his research on the CG rendering of metallic surface. Taikai's presentation received the CVIM Encouragement Award.

Nov. 1, 2020. Mt. Fuji

Lab members who love traveling went to Shizuoka. They have been playing with sheep at the foot of Mt. Fuji.

Oct. 15, 2020. Resuming activities of Ramen club

The Ramen club, which had been suspended for a while, has resumed its activities. New members also enjoyed the foam-ramen at the very popular ramen restaurant "Ramen House Mitsuba" in Nara.

Oct. 6, 2020. Long-term internship for high school students

A long-term internship began last month, and students from Narakita High School are working on training tasks. Today is the third time, and they are trying to program for color conversion of images.

Oct. 4, 2020. Outdoor event

M1 students visited Odaigahara, which is located between Nara and Mie prefectures, for the comfort of an on-campus presentation. They avoided the crowds and enjoyed the great outdoors.

Oct. 2, 2020. Award ceremony

Prof. Mukaigawa received a financial contributor award, and Prof. Funatomi received an excellent staff award from NAIST. It is very rare for both professors to wear a suit together.

Sep. 25, 2020. Graduation ceremony

The graduation ceremony for autumn enrollees was held. Xingjian has completed the master course. The diploma was handed out individually at each laboratory. He will work for HORIBA from October. We look forward to his future success.

Aug. 28, 2020. Farewell party for Gwenaelle

We had a farewell party for Gwenaelle, who is an internship student from France. While she was staying for half a year, we had a home-stay period due to covid-19, but she tackled various issues regarding ToF cameras. We enjoyed hand-rolled sushi with a lot of attention, keeping a distance from each other, not sharing spoons and chopsticks, not talking face-to-face.

Aug. 27, 2020. Nara Palace Site

Gwenaelle's return to France is approaching. Since we could not introduce the tourist spots in Nara because of covid-19, we visited the Nara Palace Site while going to the city hall for the procedure. As expected, there were few people in the Nara Palace Site. The Suzaku gate can be seen behind.

Aug. 18, 2020. Internship

Internship of Ryo from Osaka Prefecture University starts. He will tackle a new photography technology using a photon detector. With the support of Takahiro and Yuta, he started a measurement experiment.

Aug. 2-5, 2020. MIRU2020

Takenori presented his research on measuring two-layer object using a ToF camera on MIRU2020. Unfortunately, it becomes an online presentation, so on the contrary, we take advantage of the online presentation and try a new style of live broadcasting from the experimental room. As a result of the votes of the participants, we were able to win the MIRU interactive presentation award.
Daiki also presented his research on the ToF measurement in fog on MIRU2020. In this presentation, we tried to give a presentation with a real-time demonstration in an experimental room called `fog room' in which we can generate artificial smoke.

Aug. 1, 2020. MIRU2020 Young Program

On MIRU2020 Young Program, a group of Mayuka and Yuri introduced the research of SynSin of CVPR2020 and received MIRU2020 Young Program Presentation Award. Later, the certificate and prize gift were delivered.

June 26, 2020. Midnight conference

Kazuya was supposed to present his research on spectroscopic super-resolution at an international conference held in Vancouver, Canada. But unfortunately, the meeting was held online, so he attended from our lab. It has become convenient due to the development of the Internet, but the problem of time difference has not been solved. The presentation time was around AM 4:00 midnight in Japan, which was very tough.

June 25, 2020. Graduation Ceremony

Takahiro attended the graduation ceremony of the doctoral course. Since June is not the standard month for graduation, there were only two attendees. So he was able to take a picture with President Yokoya. He will continue his research as a post-doctoral research fellow in our lab.

June 12, 2020. Final day of SSII2020

Mayuka presented her research on the touch sensing using projector-camera system at SSII2020. Although the presentation is online, we tried both a theoretical explanation and a demonstration using the real system by switching multiple cameras. Actually, the assistant was busy behind the scenes. As a result of the votes of the participants, we were able to win the audience award for this presentation.

June 11, 2020. Outstanding Academic Award

Mr. Ueda, now working for Sony Semiconductor Solutions, won the outstanding academic award for his research on the projector-camera system presented at SSII2019. The award ceremony was held online at SSII2020 and Prof. Kubo gave a greeting.

June 10, 2020. First day of SSII2020

SSII2020 was held online and Mr. Mikami, who graduated in March, presented his research on visualization of blood vessels. Currently he works for Yahoo, but he had the opportunity to make a presentation by himself. As a result of the votes of the participants, we were able to win the audience award for this presentation.

June 8, 2020. Takoyaki

This year, we didn't have a welcome party for new students and BBQ during Golden Week. We continue to separately eat lunch at our personal desk. Since normal life is returning, we cooked Takoyaki for lunch after a long time.

Apr. 2, 2020. Thermography

As the orientation of new students begins, a thermography (far-infrared camera) was installed at the entrance of the information science building so that students with heat could be immediately identified. Many people seemed to be studying the temperature distribution on the body surface, deviating from the original purpose.

Mar. 25, 2020. Last day of Prof. Kubo

Today is the last day of Prof. Kubo at NAIST. We all saw him off. Thank you for all the help you have given us.
Prof. Kubo also leaves. He joined in June 2014, shortly after the start of our laboratory. For about six years since the initial launch of the laboratory, he has pioneered research in the area of fusion of computer vision and computer graphics, and has achieved excellent research results.

Mar. 24, 2020. Graduates

Due to the COVID-19 problem, the graduation ceremony was reduced and the farewell party in the laboratory was refrained. The future is unclear, but we look forward to your success.

Mar.19, 2020. French lunch

Since Prof. Kubo will move to Tokai university, the staffs went to a French restaurant for lunch as a farewell party.

Mar. 2, 2020. A new member Gwenaelle

Gwenaelle comes from the ESIGELEC in France. She will stay until the end of August, and starts a new research of ToF camera.

Feb. 18, 2020. Visit of Mr. Yamamoto

Mr. Yamamoto, who graduated last year and now works for Panasonic, has come. Originally, his hobby is camera, and he conducted research to support photography in the lab, and he is currently working on camera development. It is a vocation. A photo with Daichi and Hiromu who will be working for Panasonic from April.

Feb. 4, 2020. Sanga Stadium by KYOCERA

Prof. Funatomi, Prof. Kubo, and Taikai conducted display experiments at Sanga Stadium by KYOCERA under construction in Kyoto. This is a joint research with Mitsubishi Electric. We are studying a new use of a very wide (over 80m) display.

Jan. 30, 2020. UCLA

A photo arrived from Takahiro who is studying abroad at the University of California, Los Angeles for about one month from the beginning of this year. It was a snap-shot with Prof. Tanaka who has been staying for almost one year, and Prof. Kadambi who is the host.

Jan. 23-24, 2020. Workshops@NAIST

The CVIM, MVE, and SIG-MR workshops were held at NAIST. Takahiro was planning to present his research on the distance measuring device, but he is visiting the University of California. Hence co-author Prof. Aoto of the University of Tsukuba presented.

Jan. 7-10, 2020. CES2020

Prof. Kubo demonstrated a projector-camera system for clearly visualizing blood vessels at CES2020, a world-wide exhibition held in Las Vegas, USA. He was able to distribute all 3,000 leaflets, which was a huge success.
