Ms. Sato, a third year student of our laboratory, who is currently working for Mazda, visited us. She continues to work in various jobs related to automobile.

We held a laboratory year-end party for the first time in four years. Having a year-end party makes us feel that the year is finally coming to an end.

Dec. 21, 2023, End of year clean-up.

End of year clean-up was carried out. All the deteriorated dark screens were replaced with new ones. With the blackout curtains temporarily gone, it is a rare chance to see such a spacious laboratory.

Prof. Kushida and Mr. Kishimoto from our laboratory visited us at the open campus. Our graduates are active in various fields.

An open campus was held for local citizens, where many children were able to experience human posture estimation using a ToF camera. The new name "NAISPO! NAIST EXPO 2023" was named by Prof. Fujimura.

Mr. Watanabe, Mr. Shitomi, and Mr. Matsuyama, who are from our laboratory and are currently working for Kubota, explained about their company online. They also gave us advice on job hunting.

Oct. 2-7, 2023. ICCV2023@Paris

Prof. Fujimura presented NLOS imaging at ICCV2023 held in Paris, France. At the e-Heritage workshop, Mayuka gave a presentation on the analysis of ancient tomb murals, and Suzan gave a presentation on the measurement of stained glass. This research field is active, with over 7,000 participants.

Sep. 11, 2023. Visitors from Slovenia

A total of 23 people from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia visited our laboratory. We showed them four demonstrations using special optical measurement devices that we specialize in.

Aug. 6-10, 2023. SIGGRAPH2023

At SIGGRAPH2023 held in Los Angeles, Ippei made a presentation on human pose estimation using an event-based camera. This was his first trip abroad.

July 31-Aug. 2, 2023. Super Science Highschool

As a super science high school training, we accepted a lab stay from Nishiyamato Gakuen. She learned the art of changing the focus after taking a picture with the camera.

July 25-28, 2023. MIRU2023

At MIRU2023 held in Hamamatsu, our laboratory had six presentations. Akihiro and Ippei, who participated for the first time, received the MIRU Student Encouragement Award and the MIRU Interactive Presentation Award, respectively.

June 29-July 4, 2023. Demonstration of Moonshot project

Ryuki conducted an experiment of estimating the water content of soil using a far-infrared camera at the field experiment site of Kyushu University. This work is demonstrated for our Moonshot project.

June 14-16,2023. SSII2023

At the Symposium on Sensing via Image Information (SSII2023) held in Yokohama, Prof. Kitano introduced object recognition using laser speckle. The research introduction video was quite unique, so it caused a stir in the venue.

June 12, 2023. NAIST Web Magazine SENTAN

The research of Prof. Funatomi was introduced in the NAIST Web Magazine SENTAN. Under the title of "Mathematically Analyzing Limited Information to Construct the Whole Picture", he introduced his research motivations.

June 5-9, 2023. Measurement experiment in France

Prof. Mukaigawa, Prof. Funatomi, and Suzan went to Amiens, France, to conduct measurement experiments on Notre Dame Cathedral, a World Heritage site. They brought spectroscopy equipment from Japan and measured various stained glass windows. Every day they climbed up to a very high place to take measurements.

May 13, 2023. Open campus

We held an open campus for prospective students and showed our latest research demonstrations. In the darkroom, Akihiro introduced his new work on a light field camera.

May 10, 2023. BBQ welcome party

We held a barbecue party to welcome new members. We enjoyed so much meat that we couldn't eat it all.

May 10, 2023. Laboratory guidance

Laboratory guidance was held for new members, and Mayuka introduced the daily rules of the laboratory. After that, professors introduced research themes for new members. The total number of participants exceeded 30, and it was too cramped in the meeting room of the laboratory, so it was held in a large lecture room.

Mar. 29, 2023. Fusion wall experiment

With the cooperation of IMAGICA GROUP, we brought equipments such as the latest ToF camera and event-based camera to the studio in Tokyo in collaboration with Chiba University, and conducted an image measurement experiment in the Fusion Wall environment that Ippei is working on. The two dancers performed many times over a long period of time.

Mar. 24, 2023. Degree conferment ceremony

The degree conferment ceremony was held, and three students completed the master's course. Dr. Kushida also move to Ritsumeikan University in April. We hope that everyone will be active in the new environment.

Mar. 16-17, 2023. Prof. Caron

Prof. Caron, who is currently working at the CNRS-AIST Joint Robotics Laboratory at Tsukuba, visited us. We discussed about measurement experiments and workshops in France.

Mar. 10, 2023. Kubo lab at Chiba University

Prof. Kitano visited Prof. Kubo's lab at Chiba University and gave a lecture on adaptive sampling of spectral information. The direction of future joint research was also discussed.

Mar. 2-3, 2023. CVIM workshop @ Hakodate

Ryo presented his research on differentiable photon mapping at the CVIM workshop held in Hakodate. He also enjoyed seafood in Hokkaido where it still snows.

Feb. 27-28, 2023. Spring seminar.

The Spring Seminar was held and participants were given two days to work on clarifying fog images using deep learning. This is a photo of the online certificate ceremony.

Feb. 25, 2023. Open campus

An open campus was held for students, and various optical measurement demonstrations were carried out in our laboratory. This is the first public demonstration of Ippei's human pose estimation.

Feb. 16, 2023. Mr. Asada from Mitsubishi Electric

Mr. Asada, one of the first students of our laboratory and currently working for Mitsubishi Electric, came to our university for recruiting. The optical replica of ink painting that he made during his master's research are still displayed in Professor Mukaigawa's room.

Feb. 10, 2023. Ramen club activity

We resumed our ramen club activity at the famous ramen restaurant "Mitsuba" in Nara. Daniel, who came from France last month, enjoyed his first ramen in Japan.

Feb. 8, 2023. Master thesis presentations

Ryo, Tomoki, and Kotaro successfully finished their master thesis presentations. Unfortunately, we were unable to hold a consolation party again this year.

Feb. 7, 2023. Mr. Yamamoto and Mr. Kitajima of Panasonic

Mr. Yamamoto and Mr. Kitajima, alumni who are currently working for Panasonic, came to our university for a company information session. This year's job hunting is becoming more active.

Mr. Muraji, an alumnus who is currently working for HONDA, came to our university for a company information session. He is working on the development of automatic driving technology at the company.

Jan. 27, 2023. Open Lab

CVIM, MVE, and SIG-MR joint workshop was held at our university. Since it was a good opportunity, we held an open lab and demonstrated four researches, including hyperspecral imaging using an event-based camera.

Jan. 5, 2023. New year chicken

The year 2023 has started. We celebrated with Kentucky Fried Chicken as M1 students just finished their final examinations for Visual Media Processing II, a course offered by our laboratory.
