Dec. 2, 2017. Year-end party

We had a year-end party with Dr. Aoto and Shun. We wish your Merry Christmas and happy new year!

Dec. 10-11, 2017. CICP2017 Workshop

NAIST has a unique research fund, called Creative and International Competitiveness Project (CICP). Students make a team, plan a theme, and progress it by themselves. This year, our lab has three projects and they had a workshop for the midterm report.

Dec. 8, 2017. Visit of Mr. Mihara

Mr. Mihara, one of the first generation students of our lab and currently working for Sony, visited to our lab for an explanation of the internship in Sony. Good memories with his past desk and Lytro illum.

Nov. 30, 2017. Experiment at Japan Automobile Research Institute

Takeshi, Daisuke, and Prof. Mukaigawa went to the Japan Automobile Research Institute at Tsukuba for experiment. The purpose of this experiment is descattering in the artificial rain and fog. They do not wear sunglasses but protective glasses to protect their eyes from a powerful near-infrared laser.

Nov. 27-30, 2017. SIGGRAPH ASIA 2017

Taishi, Yuki, and Prof. Tanaka participated SIGGRAPH ASIA 2017 held at Bangkok in Thailand. Taishi had a presentation about a novel method of BRDF reconstruction from real object.
Yuki had a presentation about a method to acquire scattering phase function. They enjoyed event in the conference. Their researches are introduced in CGWORLD.jp .

Nov. 26-29, 2017. ACPR2017

Takehiro and Prof. Funatomi participated ACPR2017, Asian Conference on Pattern Recognition held at Nanjing in China. Takehiro had a presentation about non-rigid registration of histological section images. He received Student Travel Prize.

Nov. 12, 2017. Takayama Science Town Festival

We demonstrated a human pose estimation using a ToF camera at Takayama Science Town Festival. Although it is a simple system, many children seem to enjoyed it.

Nov. 8-9, 2017. CVIM workshop

Taishi presented a practical measuring method of reflection characteristics at the CVIM workshop held at Hokkaido University.
Masakiyo presented a visualization of refraction displacement in contact imaging as a result of joint research with Panasonic.
Takahiro presented a measuring method of reflection characteristics using scattering.

Oct. 30, 2017. Optical Society of Japan

Kazusa gave a presentation on scattering at OSJ-OSA Joint Symposia on Nanophotonics and Digital Photonics held at University of Tsukuba.

Oct. 24, 2017. Visitors from Belgium

Sebastien and Lawrence from Universite Catholique de Louvain in Belgium will stay in our lab for a week. We held a Sukiyaki party as a welcome party.

Sep. 21-22, 2017. Laboratory trip

We went to Ise as a laboratory trip this year. We received a lot of spiritual energy from the power spot in Ise Shrine.

Aug. 25, 2017. Send-off party for Karin

Karin will study at Oulu University in Finland for one month, so we held a send-off party. We hope that it would be a great experience for her.

Aug. 7-10, 2017. MIRU2017

Our lab members participated MIRU2017 held in Hiroshima. Kazuya presented a temporal PSF measurement using a ToF camera, Takehiro presented a non-rigid registration, and Dr. Aoto presented a viscoelasticity measurement using ultrasonic waves. Kazuya received the MIRU Nagao award.

July 22-27, 2017. CVPR2017 and CCD Workshop

Prof. Mukaigawa, Prof. Tanaka, Dr. Aoto, and Tsuyoshi gave presentations in CVPR2017 held at Honolulu in Hawaii. Tsuyoshi gave an oral presentation because his research on spectral image measurement system was invited to the workshop CCD 2017.
Tsuyoshi presented a research at poster session, held on the second day of the symposium. Prof. Tanaka also presentated a research on material estimations using a ToF camera.

July 19, 2017. Farewell party for Pierre

Pierre, who came to our lab for internship, will finish his work after several days. So, we held a farewell party. His research on light-field camera seems to make a good progress towards the end of his internship.

June 27, 2017. ISUVR2017 lab tours

Researchers from KAIST visited our lab as a lab tour in ISUVR2017, International Symposium on Ubiquitous Virtual Reality. Arnaud tried to demonstrate our researched.

June 26, 2017. Shitsukan project meeting

Dr. Aoto introduced his research on viscoelasticity measurement using ultrasonic waves at the Shitsukan project meeting held at Tohoku university.

June 23-24, 2017. VC/GCAD symposium

Akihiro presented a reseach on the ray sampling by using X-Slit for wide BRDF measurement at Visual Computing / Graphics and CAD symposium 2017. Some audiences gave him some advice about the X-Slit.

June 1, 2017. Thesis Award Ceremony of IEICE

Mr. Asada, who is one of the first generation members of our lab, received the best paper award for his research with the title of ``Simultaneous reproduction of reflectance and transmittance for ink paintings''. Since Mr. Asada, Prof. Kubo, and Prof. Funatomi could not attend the award ceremony, Prof. Mukaigawa attended.
After that, Mr. Asada received a certificate and a thesis award. This award is given to the outstanding paper published from October 2015 to September 2016 in IEICE journal. We continue the research on optical replicas proposed in this paper.

May 18, 2017. Junior high school students from Okayama

About 40 students visited NAIST from junior high school attached to the faculty of education, Okayama university. We introduced computer vision and gave a demonstration which estimates object materials using a camera.

May 13, 2017. Open Campus

New M1 members tried to introduce our research using some demonstrations for Open Campus.

May 10, 2017. CVIM workshop Doctor session

Prof. Tanaka presented his doctoral research on measuring translucent objects at the joint event of CVIM workshow and IAPR MVA2017.

May 7th, 2017. Golden Week BBQ Party

We had a Golden Week BBQ party in conjunction with an alumni meeting. Mr. Mihara, Mr. Kuniyoshi and Dr. Aoto joined the party in addition to the current members. Pierre, an internship student who would be an official member from the next day, came for the first time.

New six members joined to our lab. First of all, we decied their nicknames.

Apr. 3, 2017. Prof. Tanaka

Kenichiro has got his Ph.D. in the last March and became an assistant professor in this April. From now, we call Kenichiro Prof. Tanaka.

Mar. 27th, 2017. Graduation party

We held a farewell party for graduates. We asked Prof. Kubo to join us online from the United States despite the early morning.

Mar. 24, 2017. Degree award ceremony

The second generation students of our lab graduated master course. Six students will work and two students will go on to a doctoral course from April.

June 16-17, 2017. International workshop

We held an International Multidisciplinary Workshop on Sensing, Reconstruction, and Recognition of Environment. We invited eight young researchers from Japan and France to deepen the discussion from various perspectives such as geometry, optics, and robotics.

Mar. 14, 2017. Expressive Japan

Shin presented his research on reproducing scattering characteristics of translucent object at Expressive Japan 2017 held at Ochanomizu University. This is the research result of the Shitsukan project.
Hiromu also presented his research on floating expression for spherical display. This is the result of joint research with Mitsubishi Electric and Miraikan.

Mar. 13, 2017. PoTS symposium

Akihiro presented a ``Efficient BRDF measurement by ray sampling using X-Slit'' at the PoTS symposium held at Keio University. This is a proposal of a new ray sampling method.

Mar. 13, 2017. CGVI workshop

Xingji presented a research titled ``Evaluating Inverse Rendering of Subsurface Scattering using Translucent Spherical Object'' at CGVI workshop held in Tokyo. This presentation is the latest research result of subsurface scattering.

Mar. 9-10, 2017. CVIM workshop

Fusataka presented a research on the contact imaging at CVIM workshop held at NII. This is a result of the joint research with Panasonic. Shun also presented a research on the design of the multi-spectral camera. This is a result of the joint research with Yanmar. Dr. Aoto presented a research on the viscoelasticity estimation using ultrasonic vibration. Fusataka won the presentation award.

Feb. 27 - Mar. 2, 2017. Visit to Carnegie Mellon University

Prof. Mukaigawa and Prof. Funatomi visited the lab of Prof. Narasimhan at Carnegie Mellon University. Since Prof. Kubo is now staying there, they discussed about the collaborative research.

Feb. 25, 2017. Open Campus

We had the open campus for students preparing for an entrance examination. We introduced our cutting-edge researches to them.

Feb. 23-24, 2017. Spring Seminar

In the spring seminar at NAIST, three cheerful students experienced our lecture, ``Let's make a photorealistic computer graphics: a method for photorealistic computer graphics via measurement of optical characteristics''.

Feb. 16, 2017. Party after Master thesis presentation

All of M2 students have done their final presentation. They were so great because of their elaborative preparations. At the party, they bit into a chunk of meat.

Jan. 27, 2017. Visit of Mr. Mihara

Mr. Mihara, one of the first generation students in our lab and currently working for Sony, visited our lab. He talked about his work at Sony and experiences which students should have and then gave us valuable advice.

Jan. 23, 2017. Send-off party for Prof. Kubo

Since Prof. Kubo will stay at Carnegie Mellon University for one year, we held a send-off party.

Jan. 19-20, 2017. CVIM workshop

Hiromu presented a research on the floating-expression for spherical display at CVIM workshop held at Kyoto university. This is a result of joint research with Mitsubishi Electric and National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan).

Jan. 18, 2017. MI workshop

Takehiro presented a research on the non-rigid registration of histological section images at MI workshop held at Naha in Okinawa. This is a result of the collaborative research with Kyoto university.
Masakiyo also presented a research on the embryo status estimation using cell division timing. This is a result of the collaborative research with Panasonic.
