Dec. 19, 2016. Experiment at Miraikan

We conducted an evaluation experiment about floating feeling of videos using a large spherical display ``Geo-Cosmos'' at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan). This is a joint work with Mitsubishi Electric and Miraikan.

Nov. 17, 2016. Federation of Imaging Societies

Shin presented a research on the reproduction of scattering properties of translucent objects at the Fall Meeting on Federation of Imaging Societies. This is an example of what we are aiming for ``CG that is shown as a real object, not as an image.''

Nov. 17, 2016. East palace garden

We visited the east palace garden in Heijo-Kyo to introduce Japanese culture to Prof. Caron. There were few tourists here, so we could introduce the Yamato culture.

Nov. 15, 2016. Conveyor-belt sushi restaurant

We went to conveyor-belt sushi restaurant with Prof. Caron. He tried Gunkan-maki (battleship roll sushi) of Natto (fermented soybean), but he didn't seem to like Shirako (soft roe) and Kanimiso (crab head).

Our article introducing computer vision to children was published in the Yomiuri news paper (Nara local edition).

Nov. 14-18, 2016. Visit of Prof. Caron

Prof. Caron came to our lab from University of Picardie Jules Verne in France. During his stay, we will get some advice about our researches from him.

Nov. 13, 2016. Takayama Science Town Festival

At Takayama Science Town Festival, we demonstrated the ``Light Field Projection'' developed by Aoi who graduated last year. It is an amazing projection technology that can show different images on different depth screens.

Nov. 12, 2016. Kyoto prize workshop

Prof. Kanade received the Kyoto prize and the commemorative workshop was held in Kyoto. Prof. Mukaigawa also gave a talk on the topic of computational photography.

Oct. 15, 2016. Open lecture

Prof. Mukaigawa gave a lecture on ``Camera beyond the optical limit'' at the open lecture for the general public. Unlike usual lectures and conference presentations, the discussion was more lively than expected.

Oct. 7, 2016. Welcome patry

We had a simple welcome party for Tsuyoshi and Arnaud, admitted in autumn. They can juggle well, so juggling will be more popular!

Sep. 30, 2016. BBQ

I had a BBQ for various purposes such as a send-off party for Takahiro going to University of Oulu for a short-term study abroad.

Sep. 11-25, 2016. Stay in France

Prof. Mukaigawa visited the University of Picardie Jules Verne in Amiens, France. He stayed for two weeks as a visiting professor in order to fill in the details of the proposal of collaborative research. In addition to seminars and meetings, he investigated the Notre Dame Cathedral, which is the subject of the digital archive.

Sep. 7, 2016. Special event in FIT

Prof. Funatomi gave a presentation on light field at a special event of the Forum on Information Technology (FIT) held at Toyama university. He introduced the new challenges of our laboratory to edit the light field as it is in 4-D and to generate a new light field.

Sep. 5-6, 2016 CVIM Workshop @ Toyama Univ.

At the CVIM workshop held at Toyama University, Yuya presented his research on material estimation using ToF camera. We were able to introduce new uses of ToF cameras.
Similarly, Kai presented a research on head movement detection in natural conversation at the CVIM workshop. Since the theme of this time was first-person viewpoint, gaze information, and behavior understanding, it seems that a deep discussion was possible.

Aug. 30-31,2016. Lab trip

We went to Nachi Katsuura as a laboratory trip this summer. Because a strong typhoon was expected, we gave up passing via Totsukawa village, but the weather was good. It was a wonderful waterfall because the amount of water in the river was increasing due to the rain the day before.
The next day, we went to Taiji Whale Museum. There, we enjoyed watching dolphin and whale shows, riding kayaks and interacting with whales.

Aug. 20, 2016. Factory tour and Lively world in Osaka

As the third summer event of the laboratory, we visited the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery and Kyoto Brewery. During the tasting at the distillery, we enjoyed the freshly distilled new pot.
After that, we went to Kushikatsu (Japanese deep-fried kebab) restaurant near the Tsutenkaku tower. First of all, we explained the basic rule of Kushikatsu, ``no double dipping'' to Nathan, and then we enjoyed the lively world in Osaka.

Aug. 9-12, 2016. Super science high school

A student from Nishiyamato Gakuen high School stayed our lab and conducted research about computer graphics for three days. We are glad he enjoyed the research.

Aug. 4, 2016. Awards at MIRU

We received many awards at MIRU of this year. Takafumi received the MIRU Student Excellent Paper Award, Dr. Aoto received the MIRU Interactive Presentation Award and Demo Presentation Award, Karin and Takuya received the Outstanding Young Program Award, and Ryoichiro (Yokoya Lab) received MIRU Demo Presentation Award, MIRU Student Encouragement Award, and Young Program Award. We will do our best next year.

July 29, 2016. Lab cooperative

There is ``Lab cooperative'' to eat some foods together at night in our Lab. This culture is important for our friendship.

July 29, 2016. Nara Palace Site

Professors had a short tour of Nara for Nathan who is a visitor from France. They enjoyed a thick type Ramen noodle for lunch. After that, they visited Nara palace site.

July 25, 2016. Tenjin festival

As the second summer event of the laboratory, we went to Tenjin Festival at Osaka which is one of three biggest festivals in Japan. Firework seen from the river side was nice!

July 20, 2016. Presentation by Arnaud

Arnaud came from Belgium in April and is currently studying Japanese at Osaka University. He presented the concept of 3D digital watermark at the final presentation of the Japanese course. It has passed only four months but he seems to have no problems with Japanese in everyday life. He will be a member of our laboratory from October.

July 16, 2016. Gion Festival

As the first summer event of the laboratory, we went to Gion Festival at Kyoto which is one of the three biggest festivals in Japan. We also enjoyed Fushimi Inari and Kyoto dishes because Prof. Funatomi who knows Kyoto well arranged this tour.

July 14, 2016. Conveyor-belt sushi

Nathan said that he doesn't know conveyor-belt sushi, so we went to conveyor-belt sushi restaurant for lunch. Although sushi is common in France, salmon and tuna seem to be standard. So, we introduced unusual sushi such as natto rolls, spear squid, and whitebait. However, he accepts them lightly.

July 4, 2016. New member Dr. Nathan Crombez

Dr. Nathan Crombez came as a visiting researcher from the University of Picardie Jules Verne in France. Collaborative research on light field camera will start for two months from now.

June 26 - July 1, 2016. CVPR2016

At CVPR2016, which is a top conference in the field of computer vision, Kenichiro presented our research on shape measurement of transparent objects using a ToF camera. He and Prof. Mukaigawa went to Las Vegas for presentation.

June 18-19, 2016. VC/GCAD Joint Symposium 2016

Mr. Asada, who is one of the first members of our laboratory and is currently working for Mitsubishi Electric, presented a research on making replicas of ink-painting at VC/GCAD Joint Symposium 2016.
Mr. Ikemoto, who was supervised by Prof. Mukaigawa at Osaka University and is currently working for Canon, won the outstanding research presentation award for his research presentation on the appearance of metallic paint at the GCAD Workshop held in June 2016.

June 8-10, 2016. Symposium on Sensing via Image Information

At SSII2016, Prof. Mukaigawa gave a lecture on scene analysis based on light transport measurement. There were many reactions from the industrial community.
M1 student Takuya also gave a poster presentation on fish school analysis. He was surrounded by a large number of listeners.

May 31, 2016. Nikkei Sangyo Newspaper

An article titled ``Observing fertilized egg without load'' was published in the Nikkei Sangyo Newspaper. Fusataka has the best smile because his research was widely published.

May 21-22, 2016. Symposium on Sound Science 2016

Prof. Mukaigawa performed ``KIKU vs. MIRU confrontation' at the Symposium on Sound Science 2016. Sound and image have strong relationships each other. The final battle is planned at MIRU2016.

May 13,2016. ICCP2016

Hajime, one of the first graduation students and currently working for Sony, had a presentation in International Conference on Computational Photography (ICCP2016). He gave a talk on the 4D light-field segmentation with spatial and angular consistencies.

May 12-13, 2016. CVIM Workshop

At the CVIM workshop held at Ritsumeikan University, Takuya presented his research on the simultaneous estimation of fish population and depth, which was a part of his graduation thesis at Kindai University.
In addition, Dr. Aoto also presented a research on the estimation of lighting environment for near light sources in a doctoral session.

May 9, 2016. Sea fishing

As the second GW event of the laboratory, We held a sea fishing competition. Unfortunately it was not a big catch, but we caught a little.

Apr. 30, 2016. BBQ

As the first GW event of the laboratory, we had a BBQ. 10kg of meat was prepared for 20 participants. It means 500g per person, and it didn't decrease easily after eating.

Apr. 22, 2016. Soccer

Lab soccer club got started on this year's activities. For cutting-edge research, not only intelligence but also physical strength is required.

Apr. 15, 2016. Welcome party

A welcome party was held as 12 new M1 students were assigned to our laboratory. While eating hot pot dishes, we thought about the nickname of the new members.

Mar. 24, 2016. Graduation ceremony

The first graduate students of our laboratory completed their master's program. They will be active in their respective fields from April.

Feb. 29, 2016. Publishing book

A book has been published that summarizes the limitations of information science and the research challenges to overcome them, written by all over 50 researchers in the field of information science at NAIST. It is ``Singularity: Cutting-edge researches aimed at breaking the limitation''. Please take a look.

Feb. 27, 2016. Open Campus

We introduced our lab and researches to many visitors at the Open Campus. We plan to introduce research using more demonstrations. Actually working demos are gradually increasing.

Jan. 22, 2016. CVIM/PRMU/MVE/SIG-MR Workships

At the CVIM/PRMU/MVE/SIG-MR workshop held at Osaka University, Takanori presented his research on high-resolution temporal imaging using a ToF camera. This is a new challenge to use the ToF camera for ultra-high speed photography instead of distance measurement.
Zeng also gave a poster presentation on shadow elimination. This is the result of his internship at the Rakuten Innovation.

Jan. 4, 2016. New members

Dr. Aoto joined as a postdoc researcher and Ms. Nobori joined as a secretary to our lab. It's going to be lively.
